Abstract

|
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by the repetitive interruption in respiration during sleep due to obstruction of the upper airway. There is a high prevalence rate in the elderly because of the relatively impaired ventilator response. Also older adults undergo multiple age-related changes in respiratory physiology and sleep architecture which contribute to sleep disordered breathing. OSA is associated with cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, heart failure, stroke and arrhythmias. Also it is related to cognitive impairment and dementia due to excessive somnolence and hypoxemia. Understanding the mechanisms involved in OSA and its accurate diagnosis of in the elderly is necessary for improving their quality of life.
